Awesome Dog Movies for National Dog Month
From Heroic Huskies to Mystery-Solving Mutts—Pawsitively Iconic Picks
Although I am very much a cat girly, I can’t deny the cuteness and loyalty of an adorable pup. Dogs are indeed “man’s best friend.” We’ve shared an undeniably strong bond with them for centuries, from working alongside them to letting them live rent-free and stress-free in our homes.
My Boston Terrier was originally bred to hunt rats in the old days, but instead he spends his days often relaxing on the couch catching up on his favorite dog themed shows and movies; and honestly I wouldn’t have it any other way. Below are some dog movies to enjoy and celebrate National Dog Month with. Let’s honor these beautiful creatures who add so much joy to our lives.
My Dog Skip
A tender coming-of-age tale with a Jack Russell that’ll tug at your heartstrings
My Dog Skip centers around the relationship of a young boy who struggles to make friends until his family brings the CUTEST Jack Russell Terrier to be his companion. I have avoided this movie since my childhood because I know it will make me emotional. This is such a loving coming of age story that touches on growing up with a furry companion from childhood. Get your tissues ready before you dive into this.
Balto
The half-wolf hero who braved the Alaskan wilderness
Another childhood favorite of mine that I used to watch continuously. It was such a vibe to watch on those long winter days when I was stuck at home from school. Balto is an animated tale inspired by the true story of sled dogs that braved extremely harsh winter conditions to deliver life saving medicine during a 1925 epidemic in Alaska. I know that was a mouthful, but these dogs were truly heroes and Balto is still honored to this very day.
Togo
The unsung sled dog legend
After watching Balto, it would be a sin to not follow up with Togo. Togo is said to be a more historically accurate retelling of the same sled dog journey, but it focuses on a different set of protagonists who braved a longer and harsher part of the same trip to deliver the medicine.
This movie focuses on Leonhard Seppala’s sled dog team being led by a Siberian Husky named Togo. I loved this movie so much, and caught myself almost crying on certain parts of the story out of pure anxiety and fear. At one point, they even cross a frozen ice path that could’ve led to their deaths at any given moment.
Togo certainly didn’t receive his flowers the same way that Balto did, and in my honest opinion, all of the dogs and people who took part in this extremely difficult journey deserve to be honored.
Scooby-Doo
Mystery-solving munchie master with a groovy crew
To lighten the mood a bit, Scooby-Doo always tends to be a good pick. Who doesn’t love the brown/black spotted Great Dane that has an appetite like no other. I love seeing Scoob run around with the hippie crew solving creepy mysteries while catching the munchies in between. Yeah… it took me a while to realize why he and Shaggy always had the munchies. If you know, you know.
You have plenty to choose from when it comes to watching a Scooby show or flick but my go-to is usually the 2002 film with all-star cast Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Matthew Lillard.
DC League of Super-Pets
Super cool and super adorable
If you love super hero movies, and you love pets, this movie was made especially for you. I guess I never thought about our favorite superheroes needing some furry companion love as well. Although mega heroes like Superman and Batman are usually the stars of the show, it's the pets who take the center stage this time. With actors like The Rock/ Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart leading the hilarious cast of voiced pets, you’re in for a super silly time.
