‘Missing Children Movies’ that Deserve The Same Ending as Weapons

*Spoilers ahead*

The ending of Weapons has to be one of the most satisfying moments in cinematic history, especially for a film centered on the haunting mystery of missing children. It’s never a good feeling when we hear stories about people who have gone missing, especially kids. Sometimes we get the ending that we want. Unfortunately, sometimes we don’t.

Below are some movies that deserve the kind of closure that we received from the new mystery horror Weapons

Doctor Sleep

Let's start this list off strong with a Stephen King story, shall we? As one of the masters of suspense and horror, he sure knows how to make a creepy story where children are the victims.

The 2019 movie Doctor Sleep  serves as a sequel to the iconic The Shining movie. Danny is now all grown up and struggling with his psychic abilities and trauma from The Shining. He, however, is not the only important character in this story.

The true villain of the sequel is Rose the Hat, who is a vicious psychic vampire that gains energy by feeding off of people who possess “the shining.” Rose runs a cult that hunts down people with psychic abilities, and they get the most out of the feed by torturing and killing the victims. The younger the victims, the better for the cult.

An independent found-footage horror movie, Megan is Missing is known as a sort of cult classic among horror movie fans. This film revolves around a young teen girl trying to find her missing friend who has disappeared after meeting up with a guy from the internet.

The ending is terribly dark and disturbing, and it will leave you absolutely disgusted.

Trigger warning:  this movie contains sexual violence and graphic disturbing images.

Are you surprised that Stephen King is making another appearance on this list? If you're a fan of horror and suspense, you shouldn’t be. It is one of my all time favorite horror stories, and yes I do enjoy the 2017 movie version most.

Pennywise is an absolute demon, and I’m surprised that the kids were able to beat the hell out of him. Still, he managed to come back for Chapter Two. If he had received the Weapons treatment, we may have not gotten a sequel but Pennywise would’ve gotten everything that he deserved and then some.

Honorable Mention: The Black Phone

If you have ever seen The Black Phone, you may have noticed that it shares some similar vibes with the movie It. That may have something to do with the fact that The Black Phone story is created by Stephen King’s son Joe Hill. Joe uses his own pen name to establish his own merits, and rightfully so. You can see the influence from his father’s stories in The Black Phone, but the movie and tale are very much its own entity.

The Black Phone feels much more like a realistic true crime story with some supernatural elements. We have part two coming soon, so it looks like our villain (played brilliantly by Ethan Hawke) deserved a harsher fate than he received in the original film. I won’t be too upset because I’m actually looking forward to the sequel.

The Lovely Bones

This movie makes me sick with depression and I struggle to get through it. The Lovely Bones is a painful tale of a young girl who is brutally killed, and her spirit watches over her family struggle with the grief of her death. As a viewer, you feel the grief and anger as well. You especially feel it as you have to watch the murderer continue to live his life and essentially never get caught.

He receives some natural retribution in the end, but it doesn’t make up for the trauma of the young girl’s spirit or her family’s pain.

If you are a deeply emotional person, tread carefully while watching this one.

Prisoners

You knew it was coming, and I had to save it for last: Prisoners. The anger that this movie stirs inside of me is unmatched. I love an ambiguous ending, but damn,  this one really gets under my skin. I need to know if Wolverine is saved or not; the suspense is unbearable!

The kidnappers are figured out in this one, but the retribution is absolutely not enough. I need the horde of kids tearing them to shreds, and then I need them to go underground and free my homie Hugh Jackman. Classic fairy tale ending.

What other movies can you think of that needs to be added to this list?
