Bone Lake: Freaky, Funny, and F*cked Up

Bone Lake has managed to scare me away from vacation rentals for good.

Bleecker Street

A couple plans to have a nice romantic weekend in a vacation rental at Bone Lake, and unfortunately, ends up sharing the house with another couple that booked at the same time. I know, this sounds like Barbarian right? Not quite. I will say, similar to Barbarian this is a balance of horror and comedy here, with some psychological dashes added in.

How Was the Movie?

Bone Lake is a silly horror movie that's heavier on the silly than the horror. I really would consider it more of a thriller, but stuff does get pretty graphic and gory, so horror it is.

It feels satirical in a way, almost like The Evil Dead or even Scary Movie films. There are callbacks to other horror classics such as American Psycho, and I was even reminded a bit of the new horror film Together that came out this year with Dave Franco and Alison Brie. And if I’m being real, a lot of these actors even reminded me of other actors from horror films. I have no idea if this was intentional or not, but Sage was totally giving me Florence Pugh Midsommar vibes.

Beyond the horror and comedy, there was a deeper layer here on relationships. The main couple, Sage and Diego, are away for a romantic weekend but it doesn’t feel very romantic at all. As the story progresses, you can tell that one partner is into the relationship more than the other. There is a clear disconnect between the two which will lead to some questions that the audience just may have to decide for themselves by the end of the film. I love stuff that messes with my head like this, and it was one of the things that I enjoyed about the film.

Besides that, Bone Lake is not for me but I can see people who really enjoy silly horror movies having fun with it. I do enjoy unserious horror from time to time, but this one didn’t quite land for me fully. Crazy enough, I still thought it had a decent ending for a film that I wasn’t into very much.

Best Parts About the Movie?

Comedy:

The comedy in the movie was genuinely funny, and not overly goofy. I believe this is the core of what makes the movie likeable.

Cinematography:

There was some cool camerawork in the film that I would have liked more from. It made those few scenes feel really immersive and elevated the story telling.

Mind Games:

You’ll question quite a few things in this movie, which is part of what makes it fun. It’s mysterious at moments and then you start questioning who and what to believe. This will follow you to the end of the film, and linger a bit afterwards.

Is This Movie for You?

If you like horror comedies that aren’t super serious then you will probably have fun with this film. It will also make you think about communication and intimacy in relationships, and how essential they are to having a strong bond.
