My Mother’s Wedding: A Family Movie Lacking a Strong Bond

A wedding film that doesn’t truly invite viewers in

I was looking forward to this movie. I’ve always adored films with that charming dramedy feel, such as Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood and Where the Heart Is. They may not always win Oscars, but they leave you with a special kind of warmth and comfort you know you’ll feel every time you rewatch them. I expected that same feeling from My Mother’s Wedding.

Three adult sisters return home to attend their mother’s third wedding: one is an actress, another a nurse, and the last a captain in the Royal Navy. It’s surely a recipe for cozy, feel-good family drama with the right sprinkles of comedy.

How Was the Movie?

I was, unfortunately, quite disappointed in this movie. It has so much potential to be a “feel-good” classic for when you just want to sit back and watch a nice Sunday drama. Instead, the film played out as if it was afraid to truly be itself. It didn’t want to be too emotional, too funny, or too risqué in all of the moments that called for it.

The film lacked confidence. I could see moments where it wanted to really pull at the heart strings; especially when we tapped into Scarlett Johansson’s character’s memories. The comedy offered mostly light chuckles with a few “laugh out loud” moments. The drama, strangely, was quite dry.

There was one standout moment where the mother made a speech about her previous husbands, but nothing else really felt dramatic enough to truly care about. This is pretty sad as there's quite a bit that goes down including infidelity, lies, and secrets.

Best Parts About the Movie?

Scarlett Johansson:

Scarlett pretty much carries this movie. It seems to revolve around her character (Katherine)as we get to know the most about her personal memories and overall life. Also, her relationship with Freida Pinto has to be one of the hottest on screen couples ever, but they barely interact so you don’t really get to savor it.

Is This Movie for You?

If you’re a big fan of Scarlett Johansson, you will probably find some enjoyment in watching this movie. Otherwise, if you’re someone who enjoys cozy/family rom-coms such as My Best Friend’s Wedding or My Big Fat Greek Wedding, you’ll likely be disappointed. Still, I always encourage people to watch films and form their own opinions.

Let me know what you think if you do decide to give My Mother’s Wedding a watch.
